Main Street Union City Installs Historic Photographs in Downtown Windows
Main Street Union City has partnered with several organizations and building owners in the downtown district to install three window graphics showcasing old photographs of downtown Union City throughout the years. This initiative came from the Main Street board of directors during one of their monthly meetings.
“We were looking for a creative way to improve the downtown look and feel while building owners continue working on the inside of their buildings,” said Katie Graves, executive director for Main Street. “Instead of looking inside an empty building or one that is a work-in-progress when walking downtown, the board came up with the idea to install three enlarged photographs of downtown Union City from the 1920s and 1950s. All three are now installed and look really nice.”
Main Street worked closely with Discovery Park of America‘s senior collections and exhibits director, Jennifer Wildes, and Obion County historian, Art Chivers, to find old photos to use for this project. The organization also worked with a photo shared by local photographer, Nathan Morgan. The Print Shop in downtown Union City printed and installed the window graphics for Main Street.
Main Street’s “Re-Vinyl-izing Downtown” project is just one of the many projects and improvements the organization heads up thanks to continuous supporters of Main Street Union City.
Main Street officials invite you to walk up and down S. First Street to see the newly-installed graphics located at 213 S. First, 216 S. First and 221 S. First Street. Also, be sure to check out the improvements made on some of the historic downtown buildings thanks to the Downtown Improvement Grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development.
